Every automatic is road-tested through the full range of shifts hot and cold. Flare, hunting and harsh engagement all show up under load and vanish at idle, which is why an idle test tells you almost nothing.
Conventional, CVT or dual-clutch
A torque-converter automatic is the smoothest and most durable; a CVT is the most efficient and feels different rather than worse; a dual-clutch is quickest and least happy in stop-start traffic. The type is listed on every car.
